the St. George Dragons originated in Kogarah, NSW, as a foundation club of the NSWRL. They were a foundation member of the New South Wales Rugby League competition. With 21 minor premierships and 11 premierships, they were one of the competition’s most successful clubs. Notable players include Reg Gasnier, Norm Provan, and Graeme Langlands. In 1999 the team relocated to the Illawarra region and became the St. George Illawarra Dragons, retaining the Dragons nickname. Their home stadium was Kogarah Oval, with a seating capacity of about 22,000. The Dragons’ history includes a strong junior and senior pipeline, feeding success into the NRL era. Despite relocation, the Dragons nickname lives on in Illawarra as part of the joint venture.
