Acclaimed artist Yayoi Kusama has died. She continued painting until right before she passed away. She suffered hallucinations as a young child. Kusama transformed those youthful visions into vibrant artwork. Polka dots became her main motif. They appeared across her many paintings and sculptures.
Kusama won the Praemium Imperiale award for her achievements in art. Her work was widely celebrated. One creation, the Red Pumpkin artwork, became a symbol of Naoshima island. She remained active until she passed away. She created art rooted in her early childhood experiences and her signature polka dots.
